Short summary:
The research will investigate variation in sickness absence as a result of business cycles, occupations and family characteristics. The relationship between economic cycles and sickness absence will be investigated using longitudinal data. Two designs will be applied, one at the national level, the other at the level of various occupational segments. The first approach will use register data, the second labour force data. Occupational variation in sick leaves will be investigated as function of the characteristics of both jobs as well as individuals moving into various types of jobs. This analysis will combine various survey data sources, including the Norwegian Level of Living Surveys, and sick leaves in register data, perhaps also in labour force data. The analysis of family characteristics will be longitudinal at the level of individuals moving between various family stages measured by having children and by children´s age. It will pay particular attention to gender differences in sick leaves.

Prosjektet vill analysere variasjon i sykefravær som resultat av økonomiske konjunkturer, yrke og familiefase. Analysene av økonomiske konjunkturer og sykefravær er longitudinelle. To analyseopplegg vill anvendes. Det ene vil analysere endringer for hele landet ved hjelp av registerdata, det andre vil analysere endringer innenfor ulike arbeidsmarkedssegment ved hjelp av arbeidskraftsundersøkelser. Yrkesvariasjon i sykefraværet vill bli analysert som funksjon både av kjennetegn ved yrker og ved personer som jobber i ulike yrker. Analysen vill kombinere ulike surveydata, herunder levekårsundersøkelsene, og registerdata for sykefravær, muligens også arbeidskraftsundersøkelser. Analysen av familiekjennetegn og sykefravær vil være longitudinell ved at den følger individer gjennom ulike familiefaser definert som det å få barn samt barnas alder. Denne analysen vil særlig fokusere på kjønnsforskjeller i sykefraværet.
